Yeah the hypotheticals are *always* the tricky parts.

Because some people really want the attention that results from being edgy, but then when they realize the actual attention can be quite a pain to deal with in realtime, they lose heart and start blocking.

@wiljames @treehousedarren I could keep providing examples of this kind of stuff all day long if I had the time. It's one of the advantages of two people who have been in the software space for a very long time getting married, because several of those examples came from my husband. But I won't because you should be able to get the picture by this point.

@wiljames @treehousedarren As far as revoking lifetime licenses is concerned, they can be revoked at any time assuming the terms of purchase document stated that they could be, and I highly doubt this was left out of the original purchase contract. As far as software being bricked locally once subscriptions are in play, everything Corel (Word Perfect, Groupwise, ETC), plus everything they bought started being bricked locally in 2001. Office from Microsoft has done this since 2010, and they totally brick your local install. Also, safety software: (antivirus, malware cleaners, registry cleaners). As far as lifetime licenses for software in general are concerned, they can be revoked at any point as long as users are given notice. Which VoiceDream has been doing for at least the last year. Yeah I saw that, so I will dome some celebrating for Mets fans tomorrow. I figure these early days of the baseball season are for all the fans to celebrate with each other for at least the first week. Yes that includes even Yankees and Red Sox fans.

@wiljames @treehousedarren The numbers matter because numbers are literally the only thing that matters when it comes to doing business. Everything else is courtesy, and lifetime licenses have always been and will always be completely unsustainable. Licenses, especially software licenses, become not perpetual all the time, and they always have. Companies might grandfather previous purchases in if it makes financial sense to do so, but in a case like this where literally your entire market probably has a previous purchase, this is literally impossible to do if you want the software to survive and continue to be developed. And people being upset about this or demanding that everything just accommodate the world view that says this is about bargains or handshakes or keeping a promise or any of that stuff doesn't change any of this.

@techsinger @treehousedarren Also that was back in the day when actual lifetime licenses for WordPress plugins and themes was a thing. Obviously that went away because it had to.

@techsinger @treehousedarren That was back in the days when nobody charged for API access. I think I might have paid 10, and that still won't get you much given the recurring costs involved.
