@jscholes I know. Sending all the hugs and good vibes ETC. your way.

@SteveSawczyn And, before I forget, happy birthday Steve. I hope this year is everything you want it to be.

@SteveSawczyn The biggest draw for Goodreads is that it has access to the Amazon book database, which is unparalleled in the amount of book information it has. I don't know about Storygraph, but I know that one of the reasons Bookwyrm never quite took off was access to book information.

I had sort of planned on posting yesterday but got busy and didn't think about it until the fast was over. I hope you had an easy one, and I'll have to remember to post on fastdays just to help ensure visibility.

@magsol Yes confirming this is a relatively progressive Jewish paper.

@hauntedhideaway I used to have this shirt.

Welcome!

@munchkinbear @nycki96 @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof Sure, if you understand how to read XML. My point is that getting yourself into this sort of posture where you download software at random, make changes to your operating system that do things like change the type of updates you'll receive, and register keys you're not familiar with, all to avoid using an interface that, however bad it may be, is going to be forced on you for all sorts of apps. is pretty risky. And I'm saying this as someone who has absolutely bailed Shane out of messes he has gotten himself into by pressing buttons to see what happens instead of taking any sort of methodical approach.

@nycki96 @munchkinbear @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof Hope this helps.

@nycki96 @munchkinbear @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof UWP stands for Universal Windows Platform, and it was used for developing apps that would run on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is no longer under active development, and so app developers are being asked to migrate their apps to WinUI, which allows for complete integration with things like the new Win11 context menus and other features like that. In cases like Spotify, Whatsapp, Telegram and similar, where apps need to work across platforms and it's cost-prohibitive to have developers and project managers ETC. who can develop a native app for each platform, (Windows, Mack, iOS, Android, ETC.), you build one app for the browser and you wrap it in something so it can run on all the things. In this case, the browser for the apps is Edge, which is still a resource hog. Deprication means that something has been retired and is no longer supported, and it typically referrs to functions or code libraries ETC.

@nycki96 @munchkinbear @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof Just FYI that update is coming quickly, because the UWP deprication is a thing Microsoft is not budging on, and it affects all kinds of apps, not just Whatsapp.

@munchkinbear @nycki96 @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @Aryan Who's Aryan?

@nycki96 @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof OK I stand corrected, but, who's providing this file, and why are you adding keys to your registry from an xml file you can't verify? Do you even know what keys you're adding? I mean I'm not going to tell you what risks to take with your system, but major potential to tank the whole thing just to avoid a shitty interface. This kind of stuff is how you get yourself into trouble.

@munchkinbear @mcourcel @MariahL @SeveraSnape @FreakyFwoof There are, (checks notes): 9 instances of the new Whatsapp in my task manager, the web version in Chrome doesn't run any better, yes this and everything else that uses the Edge wrapper is a resource hog, and no there isn't a hacky way to get the old release back. We're stuck with the new one.
