I think if we approached ASD from that perspective we could better help individuals who are nonverbal or who have coexisting disabilities.

And mental illness is not an excuse for racism or mass shootings.

There are millions of us with actual diagnoses and we’ve never gone on a bigoted rant or shot up a school, church or movie theater. Stop blaming poor choices on mental illness.”

I obviously cannot speak for every person or every community’s needs or expectations.

But I do want to challenge product leaders to really consider what it means to create usable experiences.

And why they think accessibility is separate from that.

I am floored and fascinated by the near-literary quality of many of the descriptions of images that people carefully craft when appending pictures to their posts on Mastodon. Some of them will reveal a detail that had escaped my attention. Others will help me understand a subtle joke I had missed. Others still are true poems. ALT are their own microblogging world that reveals itself as you hover on a picture. And I hover, and hover.
