I’m convinced Republican politicians don’t actually believe mental illness causes gun violence. But they do it because they just know that demonizing people with mental illness has no political consequences and also that doing so buys them enough time to feign outrage until the next mass shooting dominates the news cycle.

@sclower I'm at 81%, so it's possible, but I don't know if I'm going to manage any extra effort. We'll see what happens.

@jamminjerry @seedy I can check with John about rates converted to words per minute, but I'll need to do it tomorrow. He's winding down for the day so I don't want to interrupt him with it right at the moment.

@seedy @jamminjerry The original post that sparked this thread.

@seedy @jamminjerry Sorry I'm just so pissed at stuff like this. It's gatekeeping bullshit that creates yet another barrier for blind people, to say nothing of neurodivergent people who also happen to be blind, along with blind people who lost their sight later in life, and grrrrrrrrr!

@jamminjerry @seedy I know people who consume screen reader speech output at 1,000 words per minute, process that info and interact with it every day. They are definitely not illiterate.

@jamminjerry @seedy Stupid isn't the right word for this. It's just wrong track wrong train wrong. It's an example of recursive wrongness.

@jamminjerry @seedy Christ now I want to write an article for WBH about this.
In reply to .
@seedy @jamminjerry blind people who can't read braille can't spell, it wouldn't matter because the ability to spell correctly isn't literacy.
In reply to .
@seedy @jamminjerry Braille is definitely useful in certain situations, like reducing cognative load. Blind children should absolutely be taught braille. But statements like "blind people who can't read braille are illiterate" are (1) factually incorrect, and (2) the kind of crap holding blind people back. Finally (3) spelling is neither equivalent to or an indicator of literacy, so even if it were factually true that +
