We would like to sincerely thank Senator Ed Markey for calling Elon Musk to account regarding his firing of Twitter’s accessibility team, and while we obviously hope that Musk starts taking accessibility seriously and rehires that team, we won’t be disappointed if the accessibility team members find jobs with companies who actually appreciate them and accessibility. https://www.worldblindherald.com/senator-markey-demands-twitter-reinstate-accessibility-team/

Today’s young FOSS enthusiasts may not be aware of the SCO lawsuit, which 20 years ago launched an existential threat to Linux and kickstarted the age of copyright trolls. Back then it was a huge deal.

This post summarizes what happened, a cautionary tale worth reminding.

If you express a lot of concern about free speech and diversity of views on college campuses, but don’t express similar concerns about, for example, DeSantis banning diversity of views from primary and secondary schools, then consider you don’t so much care about actual diversity of views as you do about simply making sure that right-wing ideas, values, and social preferences have primacy over left-wing ones.

If the US wasn't a superpower, I'm pretty sure we'd all be in talks to discuss banning American media along with TikTok. The US culture war is going to slowly poison the rest of western society and before long every country is going to be descending into fascism while yelling about woke mind viruses or some other made up nonsense. https://www.theinformation.com/articles/fighting-woke-ai-musk-recruits-team-to-develop-openai-rival

There are still way too many people who believe that Mastodon was created as a reaction to Musk's planned (or even actual) takeover of Twitter, and if they find out there's more to the Fediverse than Mastodon, everything else was created even later. Acutal reverse timeline, to whom it may concern: Musk bought Twitter in 2022. ActivityPub was acknowledged a standard in 2018. Mastodon is from 2016. Hubzilla is from 2012. Friendica is from 2010. Actually several months older than Diaspora*. As early as 2008, we already had something called StatusNet with a huge instance named identi.ca.

Early this morning, I deleted my Reddit account. As many of you already know, I deleted my Facebook and Instagram accounts in 2018, followed by moving away from Facebook-now-Meta’s virtual reality hardware completely (I now have a Valve Index at home and an HTC Vive Pro 2 headset at work, both using SteamVR). And last … Continue reading UPDATED! Editorial: It’s Time for a Complete Reset on How I Use Social Media

Did the NYT really publish an Opinion speculating that young girls today are more depressed than ever because of _phones_? In a world where they lost the right to control their own reproductive healthcare? Where states are pondering making them report their periods? In a world debating genital inspections to play school sports? While banning books? Where they practice school shooting drills? With climate change? Where sexual assault isn’t disqualifying for public office? Sure, it’s the phones.
