@dukepaaron I've come to believe that it was here pre-10-7 as well, it was just a little more dressed up/hidden, and we were maybe too blind to see it from our own political team. Well, the way you correct that mistake is to no longer consent to it/tolerate it. At least in my view. If we were closer to 10-7 I'd say everyone gets a chance to change, but we did that, and here we are, so at this point the ball's in their court and they have to make the first move and it will have to be one hell of a move.

@dukepaaron Her book is on my to-read list, but I've been reading her articles of late and yeah I'm just doing a much more blunt version of "People love dead Jews", except honestly at this point I think people are just fine with dead Jews and will happily take more of them, and if they can't get actual dead Jews they'll take fearful sad anxious Jews, and yet we should still stick our necks out for their causes, and I'm absolutely done with that bullshit.

@serge I think the problem with it is the over-universalization. The lessons Jews took from the Shoah are very different from the universal ones being touted as the "One True Lesson" and that's to the detriment of the Jews. And we need to stop participating in that, even though it will absolutely mean less funding for actual commemoration.

@serge To add to this: I have this friend who has started a thing where students watch a Shoah documentary and then go through an already-selected set of images and text to create this little book, and it's suposedly going to create all this empathy which will then stop people from hating Jews, and of course, all forms of hate (TM). This is the kind of feel-good bullshit I think might fall in the category, because it's a complete waste of time and won't fucking work and we should just stop doing things like this to make other people feel better.

@ratking @NicksWorld Just to add to this because I used to live in a place that actually tried to do this under the guise of checking on the well-being of residents: It's illegal, and, it's a bear to advocate against/fight against, because the kinds of pushback you will get are next level. Also, "use tech" is not a solution to this. For one thing, you need to know where to point your AI-powered thing to find any potential camera, they're small, and usually in an out-of-way place on the ceiling. And that's on top of all the great things Lynn pointed out with regard to people and smart devices and expertise and all that.
