Many of these users are entering things for their reason for signing up as “twitter going down” or “.” or things that do not identify why they feel this instance is a good fit for them.

We want to do everything to ensure this community maintains the awesome vibe it has already grown in the past week. We do not want to risk diluting or losing all of your voices.

We look forward to welcoming even more members of our community!

@McCullohMD

Reading an instance’s ruleset. No homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, etc etc. It goes on for a bit, but #Ableism doesn’t make the list.

“Well you can’t list EVERY form of discrimination! There are so many!”

Yeah, see, #Disabled people have been hearing for over a century that we’re just not as important as others. We should wait our turn.

You want to be an ally to disabled people? CALL OUT ABLEISM. Actively, intentionally, every time.

In reply to @arush.

Further to my previous embed thoughts, would it be possible for #WordPress to change how its embed features work? I don't think we considered at time of implementation that some would come up with rationalizations to use social media content without asking, and God knows we don't need any more whole news cycles based on tweets or toots or whatevers from egomaniacal nation-state leaders or performative politicians or sociopath billionaires.

It’s going to get messy as we all discuss, argue and butt heads about rules, expectations, and norms as more of us newcomers show up.

But damn if it isn’t awesome that it’s happening in the open, between admins, developers, and users to make the community stronger. These things won’t be decided by shareholders or board members or executives behind closed doors to maximize profits or growth.

And that’s fucking awesome.

@rooster

I wonder if it would be possible to create a feature for Mastodon that allows users to indicate that they do not want to be quoted without being asked first by making their posts unembeddable? I don't know enough about o-embed, which is what I think Mastodon uses, to make this determination by myself.

This will probably be my last toot mentioning the #birdsite. Instead of putting the spotlight on Elon, I want to thank all the #Twitter employees for their amazing achievements over its 16 year history.

Your contributions have not gone unnoticed, and you’ve created a space like no other. I am beyond grateful for everything that you’ve done. I may just be a random, but you’ve made such a valuable part of all of our lives.

Thank you. 💙

If you’re joining Mastodon now, here’s important advice:

1. Join a small instance
2. If you’re part of a big instance, consider joining a small instance
3. If you have technical know-how, self-host your own instance
4. If for whatever reason you want to stay on a big instance, make your own back-up instance (like I have)

MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you don’t know what an instance is, learn about it immediately.

Random Mastodon tip: If you've already written an intro on here, and you don't want to do another one, you can pin your intro post to the top of your timeline. On the other hand, if your intro doesn't cover your whole self and you want to write another one, you can pin up to 5 posts to your timeline, so intro away if it suits you. #FediTip

Made an iOS Shortcut to let you follow someone from a different Mastodon instance without the copy/paste hoop-jumping.

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/e109c8e6b8c0420c902134049b13c064

Once added to your Shortcuts app, you can share a Profile (or webpage or text that contains a profile link or username) to this Shortcut to be taken to the Follow confirmation page without ever copying or pasting anything.

Let me know if you find it helpful or run into any issues.

A few folks have asked for tips on #Mastodon so here goes:

– Use hashtags. It helps to connect with interesting people who have similar interests. (ex. I found fellow #science themed bakers!)

– Mastodon isn’t #Twitter & there’s more to social media than outrage & doomscrolling. Cross posts from the birdsite & RTs look odd.

– Don’t worry about follower counts. Tailor the experience to what you want to see.

– Share what you’re passionate about! That’s why so many of us are enjoying it here.

@Sheril

Hello newcomers! Don’t worry, you can have fun wasting time here just like at the old place. My #mastodonAdvice: 1) use preferences to stop autoscrolling 2) search hashtags you like and follow people who post to them 3) add a photo and brief bio to your profile so people will follow you back 4) don’t worry about the slowness, it’s server overload from new sign-ups 5) hashtag your posts so people can find and follow you 6) there are lots of spreadsheets of scholars by discipline to find people

For those who don’t know, Bookwyrm is basically a better, federated Goodreads. Because it speaks ActivityPub, you can subscribe to someone’s Bookwyrm feed from directly in Mastodon and see the book reviews they post!

https://joinbookwyrm.com/

Also there are 2 spots remaining in the Bookwyrm patreon to pay $40/mo and support the project in a huge way *and* have @tripofmice run a server for you and 50 of your bookwormiest friends: https://www.patreon.com/bookwyrm
