In just one year, the Twitter account has helped steer the outrage machine at the center of right-wing messaging and legislation.

RIP my mentions, but I have some thoughts on this whole libsoftictoc situation, and they’re probably going to piss a lot of people off.

I’m a huge fan of anonymity on the internet. However, if you intend to be anonymous on the internet, it’s not a good idea to register a domain, tie it to your anonymous account, and then fail to check the Whoisguard box when registering and entering your registrant contact info to include as much personally identifiable information as possible. Whois information for a domain is publicly available to everyone by default, which is why every single domain registrar on the planet offers to obscure that information for free and makes that offer prominent during the registration process. If you fail to take advantage of that service, you are explicitly declaring that you wish to be identifiable, regardless of whatever other attempts you make to remain anonymous. And if someone then looks up that already-published information and uses it, that’s not you being doxed. That’s an instance of "Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes". Also, if you intend to be anonymous on the internet, it’s really not a good idea to punch down and attempt to hide behind your anonymity while ruining the lives of average people. That kind of behavior is about the only kind that would get you uncloaked back in the before-social-media era of the internet. It’s also not a good idea to do things like appear on TV while attempting to remain anonymous. The whole point of anonymity is to have a low profile. You can be anonymous, or you can go viral and get a ton of fame and notoriety, but you can’t have both. You have to pick one.
