Reactionaries are animated by the idea that they are not only entitled to rule and shape the public square in their image, but also to be revered. They increasingly lack the cultural power to enforce that reverence, which they perceive as outrageous and present as persecution. https://t.co/F4mdKkrRt4

Reading media responses to the Fetterman debate, I feel I have a better understanding of why FDR didn't tell anyone about the wheelchair.

The feeling of being under siege that drives the reactionary project, this hatred of cultural spaces they don’t dominate: it has a lot to do with this idea that white conservatives have a right to constant public and private affirmation - which they are no longer getting.

What he’s doing is actually impressive and admirable and I get that watching him campaigning while recovering is making people uncomfortable but we have plenty of smooth talking Senators that never miss a syllable, and a lot of them suck. This guy is the real deal. https://t.co/dsbqMaNJfC

— Brian Schatz (@brianschatz) October 27, 2022

If people are uncomfortable watching Fetterman publicly adapt to his recently acquired disability and using assistive technology to live his life, fuck them and fuck their discomfort. This shit would be perfectly normal if society as a whole hadn’t spent the last longest doing its level best to make sure people with disabilities stay out of the public eye unless they’re serving as the occasional slice of inspiration porn by making sure the ADA remains mostly unenforced and generally just making the surrounding environment as inaccessible as possible either through unawareness or just plain stupidity. Mostly stupidity. And spoiler alert: people with disabilities navigate society and life despite these people, not because of them. Should Fetterman be elected, he’ll be able to do his job just fine, and probably better than most of the little shits in Congress, provided he gets the accommodations he needs which he is entitled to by the ADA everyone is still doing their best to make sure is unenforced. Everyone who’s uncomfortable watching Fetterman might want to sit the fuck down and ask themselves why that is. Because it sure as hell isn’t Fetterman’s fault. He’s not the problem. The people who are uncomfortable are.

I see Tucker Carlson is tripling down on the ableism tonight.

Let me explain something—a stutter or slowness in speech doesn’t equal cognitive impairment. Abled reporters shouldn’t need to comment on Fetterman’s ability. Presume competence and practice empathy.

So you're telling me, what, that in late September there was an uptick in crime and it has been climbing since? Is that what happened? https://t.co/NnGUKSVn2H pic.twitter.com/Uy5qfqPssm

Instead of yelling and pointing at Herschel maybe just actually take the racism out of the Republican Party. https://t.co/CdGToLPHyv

One thing Twitter got most right years ago (well before they started cracking down on widespread hate) was protecting LGBTQ+ Saudi teens who were outed on Twitter; they would have faced brutal persecution. Musk will let them be killed or imprisoned, because that’s “free speech”. https://t.co/HCsxUh6usZ

Yeah that's not how any of this works and I really wish journalists and everyone else would take the time to educate themselves on this shit before spouting off. twitter.com/MissKrabappel/…

The Republicans are an actively fascist, anti-liberty party, and most people in this country don't care.

Were not going to long survive this. https://t.co/tS7985OkM9

Mark Kirk had a stroke while in the US Senate and continued to serve — and ran for re-election with the backing of the entire Republican Party.

When he came back to the Senate after his illness he was welcomed up the Capitol steps by the Vice President at the time: Joe Biden. https://t.co/yzPpRoVMJz

I expect Twitter to remain mostly the same under Elon except it’ll somehow get massive federal subsidies and occasionally burst into flames

Looked at the replies. Got depressed.

My heart is with Twitter folks this week. There are a lot of good people there, and they deserve better than the chaos and its weird defenders. https://t.co/K4jxWzwEwe

If you think Fetterman taking his time to be sure that he's clear is "painful to watch," I can't imagine how you treat disabled people in your daily life. Actually I can because I was raised by a Dad with cerebral palsy who has been underestimated at every stage of his life.
