I love it when people discover the joys of self-hosting their stuff. I'm not saying it doesn't require work, and I also understand that it's not for everyone and there really are significant ways the process in general could be improved to make it easier for people to self-host no matter which thing they use. But it still fills my heart with pride and joy when someone discovers on their own that they can exercise their creativity in whatever way they like when self-hosting and they're happy with the result.
@acarson I do not yet host my own streaming server. But I do run my own mastodon server. So I get what you mean.
@vol4life8657 I think there’s a point where self-host all the things breaks down. Specifically when there’s either a knowledge gap or time availability issue that is so significant that overcoming it would cause issues in other parts of life, and this is different for different people. But if you can, and there’s not a ton of friction that you’re unable to deal with, self-hosting is the way to go.
@acarson I love self hosting stuff! Fiber optic home Internet makes it way, way, way more feseable. I just bought an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server with dual 16-core CPUs and 128 GB of RAM to do just that. I’ve added in some SSDs and upgraded it with a quad-port 10 gigabit network card for 40 gigabits of aggrigated or separated throughput, however I want to configure it, and the 8 gigabit symmetric fiber connection here in the apartment is better than 90% of data center connections sold to the average consumer renting dedicated servers. So its all sorts of awesomeness!
@acarson definitely agree. Your site inspired me to look into known. I am a moron and did a self install on my hosting, and even though it took 6 hours of me tinkering, I successfully set it up! Not sure how best to utilize it but I’m exceptionally proud of myself. Namecheap is my hosting provider and they helped me diagnose a couple of my hiccups so even if you feel it’s daunting I find these hosting sites will help you if need be. Worth the learning curve imho #selfhosting #indieweb
