Just saw someone advocating progressive movements organize on the Fediverse.

BE VERY VERY CAREFUL ABOUT SAYING STUFF LIKE THIS.

-Most fediverse tie-ins are not architected to protect you. For instance, Mastodon Direct Messages are not encrypted and admins can access them.

-Most instances are hosted by ordinary people who don’t have the time, knowledge, or resources to fight subpoenas in either criminal or civil actions.

Meet here. Support each other. Cheer each other on. Show solidarity, and elevate and amplify each other.

Organize in much more restricted environments, like end-to-end encrypted messengers like Signal.

Let me tell you the secret of the “Everything App”.

It’s real, it’s not called X, and it’s about 33 years old. It’s called a Web Browser.

Despite a decade of walled gardens trying hard to ruin it, you can still do pretty much any task you need on the web.

You can even make websites into apps with Progressive Web Apps (two clicks on WordPress).

The everything app is old, and under siege daily. But it works, it’s resilient, and it’s magical.

When I was a young designer, I craved the approval of other designers who were impressed with all kinds of bells and whistles, superfluous design elements, and barely legible text.

Now that I’m a design veteran, my greatest satisfaction is seeing a sight-impaired elder being able to navigate and enjoy something I built easily.

That is a hard bar to hit consistently, but that’s elite UI/UX to me.

Elon Musk, a YouTuber, and an Environmentalist are flying home. The engines explode and the plane starts to go down. The YouTuber runs to the back and returns with the parachutes and says “There are only two parachutes. One of us is going to die”. “I’m the smartest man in the world, I must live!” says Musk and grabs a parachute and jumps out. “Only one of us can live now.” says the YouTuber. “We’re fine” says the Environmentalist, “The smartest man in the world just jumped out with my backpack.”

@timnitGebru Janelle Shane @janellecshane had a look at “AI detectors” recently…

“GPT detectors were misclassifying writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated 48-76% of the time (!!!), compared to 0%-12% for native speakers.”

“a student who uses AI to write or reword their essay is LESS likely to be flagged as a cheater than a student who never used AI at all.”
