It’s going to get messy as we all discuss, argue and butt heads about rules, expectations, and norms as more of us newcomers show up.

But damn if it isn’t awesome that it’s happening in the open, between admins, developers, and users to make the community stronger. These things won’t be decided by shareholders or board members or executives behind closed doors to maximize profits or growth.

And that’s fucking awesome.

Further to my previous embed thoughts, would it be possible for #WordPress to change how its embed features work? I don't think we considered at time of implementation that some would come up with rationalizations to use social media content without asking, and God knows we don't need any more whole news cycles based on tweets or toots or whatevers from egomaniacal nation-state leaders or performative politicians or sociopath billionaires.

Reading an instance’s ruleset. No homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, etc etc. It goes on for a bit, but #Ableism doesn’t make the list.

“Well you can’t list EVERY form of discrimination! There are so many!”

Yeah, see, #Disabled people have been hearing for over a century that we’re just not as important as others. We should wait our turn.

You want to be an ally to disabled people? CALL OUT ABLEISM. Actively, intentionally, every time.

@meredith

Many of these users are entering things for their reason for signing up as “twitter going down” or “.” or things that do not identify why they feel this instance is a good fit for them.

We want to do everything to ensure this community maintains the awesome vibe it has already grown in the past week. We do not want to risk diluting or losing all of your voices.

We look forward to welcoming even more members of our community!

@McCullohMD

All,

I’ve gotten a small team together and we have started development on the Mastodon server for the disability community.

I am in the process of outlining some additional roles we will need to fill to make this succeed, and will put out a solicitation for that at a later date.

I am also making an outline for the information database we want to build, and will likely recruit people (or solicit information) for various pieces of it.

@PanickedFoodie

Journalists want to re-create Twitter on Mastodon. Mastodon is not into it.

Ever since Elon Musk completed his $45 billion takeover of Twitter last month, there has been a steady stream of users, including a number of journalists, signing up for Mastodon, an open-source alternative. No one controls Mastodon—or rather, everyone controls their own version of it. There are thousands of servers running the software, and each […]

Hey #mastoadmin – for folks running their own Mastodon servers, are there any hot setup tips or gotchas to avoid from your experience? Any setup guide preferred over the official one?

I have a tiny server and won’t be doing anything complex (for now), but if there’s something I can do now to make scaling later easier (ex. make sure sh*t won’t break if I need to add a CDN for assets?) I’d prefer to!

I’ve been researching to get ready but wanted to check for any tacit knowledge here 🙂

@tweedge

I feel really bad about this decision, but we’ve decided to make Mindly.Social an English only server.

Due to the issues with moderating other languages and people unable to filter the languages they understand, we will only be allowing English on our server for the foreseeable future.

If this new change impacts you, please work to move your account to another server at this time.

We apologize to those impacted, but it’s not viable for us to continue down the current path we are on.
