Regarding the Fedified project: I’m against its desire to be a centralized verifying authority, but I also recognize that for a lot of Twitter expats, they don’t have a website they control on which to place a link to their Mastodon profile with a rel attribute, and I think those of us who have been part of the fediverse/federation/indieweb for a while should probably grant some space on this.
@arush It makes me uncomfortable that in the rush to ascertain that people are who they are it’s reifying Twitter’s often random choices of notability. I find it reasonable to provide verification of identity, but it sometimes seems like people are chasing instant transferable clout instead. Probably necessary for now, but not without its issues.
@torstenkathke Oh there are definitely issues, and I’m sure that for some, instant transferrable clout is part of the equasion. But short of convincing newspapers and academic institutions to implement rel=”me” on their author profile pages on their sites, this is the best workable solution.
