We Once Waltzed in Kabul by Kathy Gilsinan (Common Sense with Bari Weiss)
The U.S. abandoned my friends. Now they are trapped in Afghanistan and hiding from the Taliban.

Remember this the next time some American casually announces they’re gonna move to Canada if their political candidate loses an election. This is what fleeing for your life from actual tyrannical government looks like. https://t.co/tlicHaobPu

You can say it cost a lot of money, that we would’ve been stuck there, or that it wasn’t our problem. But do not deny we broke a sacred promise. Do not deny this scars our moral credibility as a nation. Do not deny we could’ve done more to get them out if we had had the will.

I’m not that young and we all got your point. You’ve been blogging about the gay scourge for years.

And of all the mistakes the military made in Afghanistan, the “woke” acknowledgement of the humanity of their gay service-members ain’t on the list https://t.co/GD2eccCaTG

Both Trump and Biden campaigned on leaving Afghanistan. For anyone who is aghast at what is unfolding, you likely voted for it. Would be nice if we had better choices.

It is spectacularly infuriating to watch former US officials from administrations that made huge mistakes and manifold bad choices regarding Afghanistan offering up their criticism of the one that has had to clean up the 20 year mess they made.

Miller’s maternal ancestors came to the U.S. and avoided anti-Jewish pogroms in Belarus. He wants to deny fleeing Afghans the same opportunity to avoid being massacred. He is a truly awful human being. https://t.co/CDro98eBCq

Wait a minute.

A few weeks ago you were 1 of only 16 members of Congress who voted against my bill to expand and speed up the visa program to evacuate and save our Afghan partners. https://t.co/TfDsfLioNg

People who didn't give a rat's ass about Afghanistan for years now have a full day's worth of Twitter views on it.

We wanted to understand what’s happening in Afghanistan. So we talked to three unvaccinated Trump supporters at an Arby’s in Harrisburg

We've been screwing SIV applicants for YEARS. Immigration and vets orgs have been screaming about evacuations for MONTHS. People aren't in danger because we withdrew, it's because our leaders didn't care about helping them.

I deleted this because it was too short. I wanted to make the point even more directly, as I did here. A charlatan like Noem riding through a superspreader event with a flag while Kabul falls is America, 2021: Unserious, self-destructive, faux patriotic.https://t.co/ifW81iXXc4 pic.twitter.com/qqici10npx

On the call with @SecBlinken and @SecDef this morning I confirmed that had Biden decided to abandon the agreement negotiated by President Trump, the U.S. would have had to surge thousands of additional troops into Afghanistan. The 2,500 that Trump had left were not nearly enough.

A lot of American political leadership is currently working overtime on the most urgent and pressing geopolitical question they face, which is:

"Which of our subordinates are we going to throw under the bus"

I think David is right here, but I'll foot-stomp this again: They were trying to avoid "blame and shame" because there was no way to have an adult discussion with the American public - or its elected reps - that didn't involve partisan accusations of "losing the war." https://t.co/Yjz4DEfNXD

Yes, I will take the inevitable fall of Kabul (since it's what the American people have demanded for years) over a president who tried to set the Constitution on fire, overturn an election, and sell out America to its enemies.
That's my choice? Then yes, I'll take that trade-off. https://t.co/BoKEnLljpv
