Elon Musk Is Bad at This by Charlie Warzel (theatlantic.com)
The Musk era of Twitter has so far been defined by unhinged tweets, fleeing advertisers, and botched layoffs.

The only thing sadder than MAGA VC bros being wrong about the First Amendment is MAGA ambulance chaser bros pretending to be First Amendment lawyers (and doubling down on wronglaw) pic.twitter.com/uq8dBELTD6

You think you're having a bad day. You could be one of the bankers who convinced their consortium of seven banks to loan Elon Musk $12.7 billion to help buy Twitter. They already knew they were going to take massive losses before the shit show of the last ten days.

I don't doubt the sincerity of this view, but his decision to share it seems so bizarre (given present circumstances) that I'm starting to wonder if he wants to drive liberals off of Twitter and turn it into a right-wing site--or at least has decided that would be an OK outcome. https://t.co/RNO1ek97ti

lmao now they fear the big accounts will bail so I get to keep my free blue check that I got back in 2013 in the exact obnoxious way that makes the grievance bros rage-soil their diaps: I was a liberal Hollywood elite and I asked my well-connected celebrity friends for a hookup. https://t.co/kMly0Xm4HD

Blue checks used to mean you were a mild to severely annoying public figure or journalist. In a week they’re going to mean you don’t believe in age of consent laws and you’re running a crypto scam

Four years ago, a white supremacist murdered 11 Jews in their synagogue. None of them were wealthy. None of them owned any corporations. None of them controlled any industries. https://t.co/kpsvqDWSDc

Do not do this! It’s not funny or some kind of gag. It’s bad and toxic and dangerous. https://t.co/KUYvbg5HKZ

i will say this, definitely — i am not giving these fucking idiot pricks my money, on general principle. i think eventually a social network that requires a small subscription is going to be necessary, but i will be damned if i give it to king shitpost and the taint remora.

The base eats this up. DeSantis and others hope the base is looking for Trump Lite, for Trump With Polish, for Trump With a Smile, for Trump with a Pedigree.

No—the base wants THIS. And the GOP can’t suddenly condemn this now because they long ago weakly chose to accept it. https://t.co/6fKu1tCrcZ

Candace Owens just finished retweeting Max Blumenthal and now she's debuting as a water-carrying hypewoman for Kyrie. I mean, hats off. I didn't think she could reach any lower. But her hospitality toward antisemitism takes her to a whole new level of odiousness. pic.twitter.com/TBY280fisP

Of Course Democracy Is on the Ballot by Jonathan Chait (Intelligencer)
Democrats are warning that “democracy is on the ballot.” This doesn’t mean democracy will simply end if Republican win power, but democracy will become more threatened by a party that does not respect liberal norms or Democratic election victories.

What I'm hearing from inside Twitter:

Several people who were let go on Friday, then asked to come back were given less than an hour as a deadline.

Software engineers who got this call I know of all said "no" and the only ones who could eventually say "yes" are on visas.

Elon is just using the same playbook as nearly every authoritarian for the past century
1. Complain about the elites and promise illusory freedoms
2. Sweep into power on the backs of know-nothings and proclaim a new era of freedom
3. Do everything you complained about previously

Really, the mass impersonation of Musk by verified accounts was a magnificent satirical art project that achieved its purpose: demonstrating Musk's hypocrisy, the impossibility of speech absolutism, *and* the utter foolishness of the Twitter Blue revamp.

And people were worried that Elon Musk would secretly use twitter to help Republicans, here he is just doing it publicly, I hope everyone feels silly about being concerned.
