👏 Thanks to @eric for his years of work as maintainer on @thea11yproject. The project wouldn’t be a fraction of what it is today without his guidance and energy poured into the project.

The #birdsite is supposedly rolling out end-to-end encrypted DMs soon.

You’re going to see a lot of stories along the lines of “Musk turns on encryption in move that will help terrorists and child predators” or whatever.

Do not. Amplify. This narrative

End to end encryption is good. If Twitter does it right, it will be unequivocally good for the world.

The questions to ask are about the implementation, is the code open source etc.

But don’t dunk on encryption just cuz you wanna dunk on Musk

The rain has stopped, the yard is drying up, and we can now have some time on the swing at last! It’s the place to be. #DogsOfMastodon #ServiceDog

for no reason, giving a shout out to the other members of the aus.social mod team.

It’s a really diverse team, with an impressive collective set of knowledge and experiences, and I’m always learning from other members.

I’m also proud to be part of a team that quickly sees the complexities of some of the reports we collectively deal with. And we strive to act in a fair, consensus manner; understanding our responsibility for all members of this online community.

Are we perfect? No. And I love that about us.
Do we act professionally, while on the mod-clock 7 days a week, as volunteers? Yes

Anyway – whatever Instance you are on – be nice to your admins/mods

I’ve started a new #blog — Stumble.Press — to informally capture experiences and reflections as I figure out this new life as a local #newspaper #publisher. #journalism #localnews #blogging https://stumble.press

You aren’t struggling because of other poor people

You aren’t struggling because people won’t have babies

You aren’t struggling because of drag queens

You are struggling because you are oppressed by the ultra-wealthy who manipulate you to hate other poor people instead of them

@jamminjerry Several years ago I wrote a blog post examining this topic. One thing which has changed since I wrote it is that I now own a Braille display but the questions that I raised are still valid.

Kids these days will never know the struggle of waiting 16 hours to download a Beastie Boys album from Limewire only to find out it was actually Aerosmith.

—@StefanThinks

I’m just going to admit this even though it makes me sound like an insensitive asshole, because look, we all make mistakes and the point is to grow, right?

when I first came to Mastodon and people were reminding me to add alt text to my images, I was a little irked

then I read several posts about how much this means to people who rely on reading apps to understand the web

now I’m fully converted. I enjoy writing alt text.

and I think it’s crazy this isn’t standard across all social mediums.

History can and should choose to remember Elon Musk as a man who pledged $6 billion to end world hunger, balked when presented with a plan to do so, and then spent several times that amount to prove that no amount of money can make people think you’re funny and cool.

—@mjmbca

Gravatar now supports Mastodon as a verified service. Also, Stack Overflow and GitHub. I found this out by looking at someone else’s WordPress profile on wordpress.org! OK, cool.

Legit, seeing `<span role=”button”>` in someone’s code makes me want to ask “Why are you hitting yourself?”

It’s such a bananas thing to do. Just use the fucking button element already.

well, a new word for everyone to remember. apparently, now I am a person with ocular adversity. So this is the new word us who can’t see for at least the next 64 hours until someone comes  up with a sillier term!

I think we should ban presidential nominees from restrooms.

Find a particular VoiceOver command on macOS difficult to perform, or want to map a keyboard shortcut to open a particular app? VoiceOver’s Keyboard Commander, found in VoiceOver Utility > Commanders > Keyboard, allows you to configure custom commands to perform VoiceOver functions, open apps, and run scripts. #TipTuesday https://www.applevis.com/podcasts/speed-everyday-tasks-your-mac-using-voiceover-keyboard-commander

It’s easy to demand changes in others, far harder to take ownership and demand changes in ourselves.

—@bruce_toews

If you’re using social networks to find news about the things you’re interested in (yes, that includes Mastodon), it’s time to stop and use something that was actually made for that: RSS!

So I made a quick video about this old tech, and how it’s still the absolute best way of curating what you read, watch, receive, or listen to:

I’m convinced Republican politicians don’t actually believe mental illness causes gun violence. But they do it because they just know that demonizing people with mental illness has no political consequences and also that doing so buys them enough time to feign outrage until the next mass shooting dominates the news cycle.
