I don’t know who needs to hear this but abandoning that open source project that is burning you out is not a personal failure.

You can just mark it as unmaintained and walk away.

Maybe someone else will pick it up.

Maybe they won’t.

It’s not a child. You don’t have to raise it to adulthood.

Why an ads plugin concerns me is that paid ads come with a LOT of expectations around analytics and “engagement”. Which means that any instance running an ads plugin would explicitly be harvesting data from the rest of the fediverse to sell to the ad company.

Which is hostile and horrible behaviour, and to me means that federating with that instance is dangerous.
