The real reason that online-only conferences won’t be allowed to work is because the argument about whether or not online-only conferences can work is a convenient proxy battle for the people who believe their subsidized-travel job perk is more important than the accessibility of their field and the health and safety of its marginalized participants, and who _really_ want to avoid saying so out loud.

Me filling in a grading form 10 years ago: enters text into PDF, save and submit

Me filling in a grading form today: opens PDF into Adobe Acrobat, all bullet points are now on the far left hand side, two areas for signatures are greyed out with radiation symbols. Years ago, I was at a web development conference talking with a friend and some people and this dude interrupted us to complain about how terrible it is that buildings can’t be renovated without making them accessible. I was afraid to disagree because he’s a republican, was carrying and we were in Florida, and so we just walked away from the conversation as he was ranting.

I keep thinking about that when I read about Reddit right now.
