U.S. military aid to Israel has always been a red herring, a convenient talking point for bad-faith actors on both extremes of the political spectrum, including some running for public office today. It accounts for 0.054% of the federal budget – less than what the U.S. government spends in a day and a half merely paying interest on the national debt. The notion that eliminating it will have any effect on American families is laughable. With one notable exception: the families of some 20,000 employees of the U.S. defense industry, where virtually all of the aid is spent. Those jobs exist in large part because of Israeli spending on U.S. military hardware and they could very well be endangered if that spending is reduced or cut. The reality is that American military aid to Israel functions largely as a subsidy for the U.S. defense industry, and while it has been an important component of Israel’s defense budget and its elimination will require Israeli military and budget planners to reevaluate their projections, Israel will adjust and will emerge freer, more independent, and more self-sufficient. I’m not sure the same can be said of those 20,000 families.
