Attached: 1 image It's really jarring watching how right-wing media regularly scrape social media for super unhinged takes that basically nobody agrees with, writes entire articles implying they are commonly held view among the group they want to attack, then they use the outrage generate from the article to undermine the rights of the entire group based on a straw man they built from a single post.

Attached: 1 image Sen. Marco Rubio just wrote this editorial regarding a potential TikTok ban. It's apparent to me that his gripe isn't with TikTok's surveillance or algorithms or data collection per se. It's that a Chinese company is doing it. Apparently, if TikTok were American, they would be peachy keen. But Chinese? That's bad! I don't like TikTok, and I believe it's generally an evil corporation. Yet I also dislike how Sen. Rubio is pushing yellow peril. https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/tiktok-other-social-media-controlled-enemies-must-banned-now-we-cant-wait-longer

“Media discovers tech entrepreneur widely proclaimed for years to be smarter than Einstein, kinder than Jesus, and wiser than Solomon actually isn’t”. No questions then get asked as to who made said proclamations and no lessons are then learned as to why it might be a good idea to approach widely hyped technology with weary skepticism, as is pretty common among technologists actually working at the coalface.

People who say, "The Fediverse doesn't allow search" are literally making that up. And it's easy to refute. Do a search for your username on Google or DuckDuckGo, and you'll find so many of your posts. In your Mastodon account preferences, you can also set how indexable you want to be. If Fediverse search was impossible, why is so much of the Fediverse indexable by Google?

Really sick of having Republicans crash the economy when they're in power and when they're not in power, they threaten to crash the economy to get things they couldn't pass when they were in power. RT @bpmehlman@twitter.com The debt limit has been raised 78 times since 1960: -49 times under GOP presidents -29 times under DEM presidents Per @NBCNews@twitter.com https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/debt-ceiling-deadline-will-republicans-pass-rcna65710

I get that the GOP likes to pretend that MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech is a call for colorblindness (it's not), citing the "content of their character" line, but here's a little secret: If you're the type of person who feels the need to cling to that line, free from context, then the "content of your character" is pretty apparent, and it's not looking good for you.

Attached: 1 video Kier Starmer is all 'lets have a respectful debate' now Iain Anderson from @stonewalluk@mastodon.social wants to reset the debate with anti-trans groups. No, just no. We tried that for years and you're asking trans people to 'debate' people who call us perverts and paedophiles, who mock our dead, who relentlessly attack us and want to remove our rights. Stonewall needs to actually listen to the trans community, we need a fucking voice that isn't 'chaperoned' and is actually representative.

Merry Christmas.Twitter APIs have been abused and data is now being sold. Consider your account security. Especially if you are coming from Twitter and maybe… just maybe… don't have the best security practice there. I doubt this is the last we see of these types of events. The data is now being sold online. Twitter data breach: +400m users. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34125843

Reminder that if you're feeling lonely today, see this hashtag: ➡️ #JoinIn There are lots of people (myself included) keeping each other company on there, with all kinds of posts from hot chocolate recipes to historical photos to horses covered in tinsel to just general thoughts and chatter. You can use the hashtag however you want, serious or fun, and anyone using the tag is welcoming of replies and discussion so it's a great way of striking up a conversation. See you there! ☃️

The more I see gushing uncritical praise of machine learning, or worse, completely fabricated accounts of what people think goes on inside machine learning models, the more I worry about what seems increasingly like a literacy problem on the part of users. When people don't understand a technology, they just start making things up that sound like they could be true and which fit their existing biases. What's that gonna look like going forward with stuff like LLMs?
