Another good resource is imagecaptionspls@a.gup.pe (not tagging it to avoid spam). It’s both for people who can’t describe their images, and for those of us who can’t see to ask for descriptions when we’re curious.
It used to be super active when it was on gup.pe, but since switching to a.gup.pe useage has fallen. Since the group boosts all posts it’s tagged in it’s way better at spreading things around than hashtags are, so it’d be lovely to see it used more.
But yeah, so many resources for the people that need them, which are usually also the ones that absolutely would write media descriptions if they could! Meanwhile there’s perfectly abled people whining because they have to take a couple minutes out of their day to be kind rather than having AI poorly do it for them. Sigh.

Just a friendly and quick reminder. If you care about your posts on social media, and don’t want to treat them as ephemeral, make a backup of them.
Anything you make and post, if you care for it, keep it yourself if you can.
It doesn’t matter what social media it is, either. If somebody else is hosting it for you, it can’t hurt to keep a copy yourself. Hell even if you’re hosting it yourself, backups can never hurt.

Long hsot, but here goes.

When reviewing a large diff in #GitHub (I’m talking about several dozen files with a few thousand changed lines) the UI shows only the first 4 files. To view more, you have to scroll the page. Fine for mouse users, but I can’t find a way to accomplish this from the keyboard. So now I can’t do part of my job, and of course this isn’t documented anywhere. Tips welcome.

I just spoke with my specialty pharmacy who handles my biologics, and they told me that the shipping carrier who handles my (refrigerated) injections may be fixing to strike on 1 August. So if you live in the US, and take medications that required shipment/refrigeration, you may want to speak to the pharmacy about refilling before the strike date so you don’t have a gap of time without meds.

I absolutely do not trust anyone on the Fediverse who claims to be progressive and interested in social justice yet can’t be bothered to add #AltText to the images or videos in their toots. If they don’t see disabled people as important, who else do they not care about?

If you have a condition that makes it difficult for you to compose and add AlText to images, you can ask for help by including the #AltTextForMe (or #AltText4Me) hashtag and someone will help you.

I think RSS is pretty neat. And Mastodon makes it really simple to become a publishing technology power user, even without fiddling with feeds yourself.

You can use it to curate your own information needs via searches right from within Mastodon (well, you could upgrade to full information junkie and get a dedicated feed reader) and you can use it to selectively push your information elsewhere in a computer readable format.

I went to my garage to let my kiddo in and for kicks I took out the #AQI monitor. AirNow.gov says #Pittsburgh AQI is 152. The first reading is the garage when I first went out. I opened the door for ~90 seconds for kiddo’s entry & the second reading is 5 minutes later. This shows how swiftly smoke can foul indoor air if given entry. The monitor was 30 feet from the door. When they say to keep doors and windows closed, they mean it!

We found 414 suits this year, compared to 336 in the first half of 2022 and 316 in the first half of 2021. I was surprised to learn that the amount of right-wing conspiracy nutjob content showing up in people’s feeds on birdchan is increasing at an accelerating rate.

And by “surprised” I mean “not at all surprised.” :blobcatcoffee:

I suspect this means we’re going to see another influx of users to #Mastodon – many of whom may be coming here more out of desperation than anything else so please be kind and helpful if you have the ability to do so. I’m going to try to do the same. 😊
