The speech and sounds manager is still a thing.

I don't think they'll take it up given the unanimity of the ruling of the appeals court.

@objectinspace Well yeah you'd honestly want to use PGP, but PGP isn't easy to set up for the average user, so Proton.

I'm tired of having to trade privacy for accessibility and vice versa.

@objectinspace @jscholes @matt @tristan It's also that the decisionmakers literally won't let the devs/designers take the actual time needed to build accessibly from the ground up. Especially if accessibility is perceived as getting in the way of whatever hot new feature the decisionmakers want. Or eye candy. And yeah, at the end of the day, the thing that matters is the people with the power to make the decisions giving a shit. So yeah devs/designers not caring enough to learn plus decisionmakers not caring/not giving the time/money or whatever creates a perfect storm of fuckery.

@tristan @objectinspace @matt Yeah which makes your group smaller, and also, isn't how any of this is supposed to work. They're basically telling people "You have to be hackers in order to even have a shot at fixing things that are mission critical, and that's not even a promise that we're actually going to accept the fix".

@tristan @objectinspace @matt Why should you actually fix it when the four freedoms can become the four responsibilities for a statistically insignificant subset of your users? And by "subset of users" I mean the users who will actually speak up about accessibility of FLOSS, which isn't that many.

@ppatel Yeah I'm totally down for doing everything you can to give someone who actually wants to fix their shit a fair chance/opportunity to fix it. I'm not convinced many want to actually fix it though.

@objectinspace See this is my problem, specifically with the people who scold us and tell us not to be assholes. Don't they think we've already tried that? And also it's mind-numbingly obvious that none of them have ever submitted anything to any repository or bug tracker or even just an email address, and as much as I'd like to keep that in mind the blazing ignorance coupled with the staggering level of confidence in their rightness just cancels any goodwill I might be tempted to show them. I'm out of patience.

@objectinspace @matt They're happy because they figure you'll do the work and they can deny the pull requests and nothing gets done while they can say "See? We care about accessibility we let the community submit fixes" God I hate open source so much sometimes.

Yeah and the only real way to do that is to use an accepted standard, which at this point is json. And I agree data has to be truly portable.

@Pawpower @AuroraNebulosa That's the whole problem with all this hype around AI in the blind community. It doesn't intuit. It doesn't think. It doesn't halucinate either but that's a whole separate discussion.

I'd do it in json for starters. I honestly don't know why this hasn't been fixed. I'd also build a decent json importer into WP Core that would give users an interface for working with some common json archives of their data from other places and making it fit into their WP installation so they can own their data and have it be portable, but this is just me and I'm an indieweb fanatic these days.
