@SingingNala @objectinspace Because you can't have a smooth onboarding process unless you deal with the instance question. Lots of new users, rightly or wrongly, find that to be a huge friction point, and because discovery without a recommendation engine is incredibly difficult, you're left with promote one server or other. And since the Mastodon devs run two large instances, those are the ones they're going to go with.

@dangero That could possibly work, but I think the elephant in the room in all the criticism of the Mastodon project just pointing people at mastodon.social is that discovery without recommendation engines is very very difficult to implement, let alone get right. Also, just because I think your idea's ultimately bad doesn't mean you shouldn't continue to throw stuff at the wall to see what resonates and what doesn't.
