@summersun704 @ThatMermaid_J It's not that it's any less safe than big social, both Mastodon and big social don't encrypt their messages. What I would say is be aware of the kind of things you're sending via DM on any service except one that encrypts its messages like Signal or Telegram. Note: I like Signal better but that's just me.
