@alm10965 It would still need a shamash, since along with being used to light the other lights, the shamash is there so that the menorah can be used as a non-ritual light source. The lights lit for Hanukah specifically cannot be used other than as a physical witness of the miracles, which means if you need light for something like reading or seeing your way they couldn't be used. Thus the other uses of the shamash.
