@serge I don't know why anyone is encouraging them to say brachot when lighting as, at minimum, they are not commanded to light. And that's aside from the fact that the hanukiah has 8 and not 7 branches.

@acarson @serge The comments were all so cringeworthy but that was probably the worst. Many pointed out that it was the wrong menorah but they were all so appreciative and encouraging. Really alarming/disappointing. 👁️

Same exact conversation took place on r/Jewish over at Reddit. Same amount of support/appreciation.
It doesn’t feel right to me, either.
I’m reminded of Denmark and other places where everyone wore yellow stars when Jews were ordered to. That’s of course different in many ways, not being a sacred aspect of our religious observances, and being a solidarity that saved lives.
But maybe that’s where the thank-you Jews are coming from?
In any case, I agree with you as usual, Miao. But there’s a small part of me too that’s kind of desperately eager for any symbols of support at all right now.
