@jscholes @FreakyFwoof @MoonCat And as far as your question "who else?" is concerned: Are you really going to tell me that all the inspiration prostitutes out there (looking at you Michael Hingson) really aren't making any difference at all? Because all the people claiming unawareness have computers in their pocket and by this point should at least be aware that people with disabilities do all sorts of things.
@arush @jscholes @FreakyFwoof @MoonCat Taking the DWP specifically though, as I said in the thread, it’s a hostile institution one of whose primary goals is to get as many people off benefits as possible. Because of all the negative expectations, employees come in for a lot of abuse, even more than regular operators, and are unfriendly and unhelpful in turn.
@arush @jscholes @FreakyFwoof @MoonCat I can well believe that such a department’s training prioritises how to spot malingerers over how to help genuine claimants, fails to train inclusively and does not hire with an interest in getting staff that understand the need for inclusion. therefore I’d blame the company policies and ethos far more than the individual.
@arush @jscholes @FreakyFwoof @MoonCat I’m not going to claim they aren’t making any difference at all, but I am going to claim there are many people they aren’t reaching as evidenced by my own experience of having to answer the same questions, put in an inoffensive spirit of curiosity, again and again. Some finish the conversations amazed, despite my best efforts to avoid that.
@arush @jscholes @FreakyFwoof @MoonCat Maybe these people aren’t using the right platforms I dunno. What I do know is that there are still a hell of a lot of people to reach.
