Anyone else have a feeling that the layoffs here, combined with the $8 cash grab...is because they might be worried about making payroll? If they are losing $4m a month, where's the operating capital coming from if advertisers have bailed?

Every Elon tweet right now just has hundreds of replies from random people trying in vain to explain how literally any of this works to him and it is some of the funniest shit I have ever seen on this site

Institutions are fragile. They can be destroyed really easily. And that seems to be happening here in real time.

Probably too late, but

1) Hire a proper CEO with relevant experience

2) Stop insulting the users

3) Stop threatening the advertisers

4) Stop amplifying and empowering crazy people

5) Delete the owner's account and communicate through PR professionals.

Every single one of his ideas are badly thought through. Not just the technical ones, like how content moderation isn't trivial, but even insanely basic ones like "should I pick a price and stick with it" or "what is Twitter's crown jewels and how do I keep them from leaving"

He doesn't understand the platform and killed the goose laying his golden eggs. It'll continue to death-spiral essentially indefinitely from here, as more and more big accounts and advertisers and whole network groups here migrate out to Mastodon, or long-form platforms elsewhere

And it gets worse. The more the accounts leave, the fewer eyeballs the remaining advertisers will have, and the fewer paid signups will happen. But the debt repayments are fixed and large, and don't care. So he'll need to rent-extract more and more aggressively to stem the flood

Last week, I mostly hoped he'd see sense, or his advisors (or bankers) would wrestle his phone away.

Think it's too late for that now. Tipping point's already passed. Engagement here is falling off a cliff, and whole communities are getting established elsewhere.

Never thought I'd say this but Elon is starting to make Mark Zuckerberg seem like a reasonably decent social media company manager

It's pretty depressing when "free speech" is about really rich powerful guys wanting to say whatever the fuck they please and not about people saying whatever the fuck they want about people in power.

Tell that to a dissident or a journalist in a country that doesn't protect either. https://t.co/gvMxQYJBfx

My technology brother in cyberspace, nobody is saying that what Twitter is doing violates the First Amendment or First Amendment principles.

They are simply pointing out that your claim that "impersonation is not protected by the First Amendment" is...terribly wrong.

Twitter now: you're at a party with your friends when a weird guy buys the house, grabs the mic from the band & starts picking fights with the guests.

As the people who brought the booze start filtering out he shouts after them that they had better come back or he'll be even more unpleasant.

And yet in the new Twitter, he could put on a blue badge, say "I'm a journalist, my information can be trusted, and..."

Basically, there's no point in explaining over and over why this is a bad idea, is there

Elon tweeting this at a “digital media manager” who works for a local government agency right after tweeting that his mission is to make Twitter the most accurate source of information is…nothing…it’s just depressing. https://t.co/KciBf5RhHm

The human rights team he fired would likely have a different, evidence-based opinion about this. https://t.co/gvMxQYJBfx

What do I have to pay for half the Elon Musk tweets that are twice as relevant?
